Mid summer has been fun at the cooking school, we have enjoyed numerous cooking classes and a beautiful wedding. A highlight was the culinary cycle tour followed by a weekend with South African singer-songwriter Arno Carstens and family visiting African Relish.
Escape Cycle Tours culinary week in the Karoo
Escape Cycle Tours has been a regular client of African Relish for 8 years. Business partners Liz Szabo and Chris Murray operate from Johannesburg and offer specialised adventure cycling throughout the most scenic parts of Southern Africa, incorporating both road and mountain bikes.
A Gourmet Cycling Tour
Chris and Liz offer a 6 day Gourmet Cycle Tour when they visit Prince Albert. This gives the team at African Relish the opportunity to showcase the best culinary experience the town has to offer. The cyclists are given a taste of various local eateries. Lots of creative cooking happens in our kitchen. Breakfasts are served al fresco. Guests are entertained with activities like storytelling, olive and wine tasting, stargazing, a fig tour and cooking lessons.
And of course there is cycling. The best outrides are done up the Swartberg Pass then down into The Hell; to De Rust and also the Weltevrede Valley. This is a fun filled few days with lots of good exercise to work off those extra kilos gained by eating fantastic food at each meal. Chris and Liz make this experience extra enjoyable with their easy approach. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet the locals and experience the Karoo countryside. Fellow riders are always there when the going gets tough. Plus a backup vehicle is on hand for the weary cyclist.
The next tours are in September and October.
Arno Carstens at African Relish
The fans were dancing at the well-received Arno Carstens concert in The Showroom Theatre in Prince Albert. The following day the Carsten family had a relaxing cooking class in our African Relish kitchen.
This man is not just a superb musician … he can also cook! Arno smoked kudu fillet and slow braised lamb shanks while Melanie mastered puff pastry and sourdough bread. Young Hayden baked his own ginger biscuits. The African Relish team loved the concert and time in the kitchen with this star and his family.
