Mid summer and the year end holidays are here. We are happy to have had an increase in visitors this year and over the last few weeks a number of international tourists have enjoyed their African Relish experience with a meal at The Chef’s Café, a Foodie Tour and cooking class or stay in our cottages. There have been a few hiccups on the way, our website failing us a few times will need a major overhaul in 2023; the town has had some municipal water issues that have impacted on many in our surrounds; load shedding (thank goodness for our gas cookers and wood fired pizza oven) and issues that challenge the team at times.
The Good Things
Then it rained. The new vegetable gardens are in full profusion providing wonderful ingredients for the cooking school and cafe. There is so much to harvest: garlic of Abruzzo and Venice, zucchini, green beans, beetroot, kale, peppers, chillies, rocket, swiss chard, flowers of zinnia, dahlia, cosmos, yarrow, the sun, and chamomile. The gardens have flourished under the supervision of Brett Bard and our gardening team.
The restaurant has a shiny new extended and tiled scullery and kitchen.
What’s new on the Chef’s Café menu: the new Pizza Pollo Alla Griglia (BBQ Chicken): A spicy aromatic pizza with mozzarella, sun ripe tomatoes, spinach basil pesto, BBQ chicken, confit garlic harissa mayo topped with spring onion. Or enjoy the Pizza Grande: A spicy meaty pizza with thinly sliced smoked kudu, salami and bacon, mushrooms, chilli and feta. Our pizza special continues.
Garden fresh salads with ingredients from the garden are the wow of the day. Guests rave about our vegetarian pizzas with gluten free bases.
The deli is stocked with festive goodies and new books. We are keen to try the recipes in Loubie Ruschs’ new cookbook “Cape Wild Foods: A Cooks Guide by Loubie Rusch”
Cooking classes for December include kids holiday fun with baking by Jacqui.
The African Relish premises are often used as a venue with the abundant garden, olive orchard, grand piano we have on loan awaiting Kyle Shepherd to play again at the PACT Journey2Jazz festival in May 2023, delicious catering and staff service. Weddings and birthday celebrations plus specialist groups enjoy a buffet meal, traditional braai or finger canapés Karoo style. Madri, Shane and the team provide wonderful cakes, breads, table styling and flower arranging.
